Special Issue: Recent Advances in Fish and Shellfish Larviculture

The 8th Fish and Shellfish Larviculture Symposium, Larvi 2024 held in the vibrant coastal city of Ostend, Belgium, marked a pivotal moment in the field of aquaculture. Ostend welcomed over 360 participants from 50 countries, representing a wide range of expertise across academia, research, and industry. This gathering created a dynamic platform for exchanging insights, innovations, and challenges in the field of fish and shellfish larviculture.

At Larvi 2024, we witnessed groundbreaking research and cutting-edge techniques, many of which were presented through compelling oral presentations. These presentations covered a wide range of topics, addressing the critical areas of broodstock management, larval development, commercial-scale production, nutrition, and biosecurity. In recognition of these contributions, we are excited to launch this special edition, which features selected mini-papers that encapsulate the essence of these presentations.

This special issue highlights five key themes central to the discussions at Larvi 2024:

• Broodstock Management, Maturation, and Spawning

• Developmental Biology and Deformities

• Larviculture at Commercial Scale

• Larval Nutrition

• Disease Prevention, Pathogen Control, Biosecurity, and Health

Each of these areas is vital to the ongoing development of sustainable and efficient practices in larviculture. The selected mini-papers not only reflect the depth of knowledge shared at the symposium but also demonstrate the diversity of approaches and innovations from across the globe.

We hope this collection will contribute to the continued advancement of the field and serve as an invaluable resource for researchers, practitioners, and students alike.
