Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Bernd Friedrich, born in 1958, studied metallurgy and electrometallurgy at RWTH Aachen University. In 1988, he completed his Ph.D. with a thesis on "Electrolytic Refining of Recycling Tin Using Three-Dimensional Electrodes.” After many years in management positions at GfE Nürnberg and VARTA Batterie AG, he returned to RWTH Aachen University in 1999 as Full Professor of Metallurgical Process Technology and Metal Recycling.
This year, Prof. Friedrich celebrates his 25th anniversary at the IME Process Metallurgy and Metal Recycling Institute. This collection will honor the scope of Prof. Friedrich’s career with papers on pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy, electronic scrap recycling, circular economy for batteries, extraction and recycling, aluminum recycling and melt purification, waste treatment and primary metallurgy, alloying metallurgy, nanoparticle synthesis, and pure metals.

Dr.-Ing. Elif Emil-Kaya
Dr.-Ing. Emil-Kaya graduated from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in 2014 and completed her master's degree in 2017. She holds a PhD from IME, Process Metallurgy and Metal Recycling, RWTH Aachen University, specializing in the recovery of rare earth elements. She is currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Her research interests include resource recovery from secondary sources, as well as the recycling of metals and metallurgical by-products. -
Prof. Dr. Kerstin Forsberg
K. Forsberg is professor in chemical engineering with a specific focus on crystallization and precipitation processes. She applies her knowledge in projects concerning hydrometallurgical recovery of resources from primary and secondary resources, e.g., spent batteries and magnet waste. Forsberg is head of the division of resource recovery at KTH. She is also current chair of the Hydrometallurgy and Electrometallurgy Committee at TMS. She is a passionate advocate for collaboration for sustainable development. -
Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Panias
Prof. Panias graduated from the School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1984. He completed his doctoral thesis on gold pyrometallurgy at NTUA in 1989. He is the Director of the Laboratory of Metallurgy and the Head of the Technologies for Sustainable Metallurgy research group. His research interests include, but are not limited to, extractive metallurgy, electrometallurgy, waste valorization, wastewater treatment, geopolymerization (lightweight porous and fire-resistant inorganic polymers), as well as chemical processing of ores and metallurgical wastes using ionic liquids. -
Prof. Dr. Gabriella Tranell
Professor Tranell holds an MSc in Geotechnology/Metallurgy from LTU, Sweden, and a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from UNSW, Australia. Prior to joining NTNU in 2009, she worked as a Senior Scientist and Manager at SINTEF. Her research interests and activities include the production and refining of ferroalloys and silicon, refining of aluminum, solar cell materials, environmental issues and emissions from metal production, and recycling of metals and metallurgical by-products. She is currently the Scientific Director of the Zero Emissions Metal Production Centre.
