Introduction
Rape is the attempted or completed vaginal, oral, or anal penetration against a person’s will (National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, 2021). Rape can occur among strangers or in the context of an intimate partner relationship. Factors that contribute to intimate partner rape include gender, sexual orientation, culture, substance use, and the inability to recognize rape by an intimate partner. The lack of obtaining consent is one of the key components of intimate partner rape (Logan et al., 2013). The context of intimate partner rape is difficult because not every victim of intimate partner rape acknowledges or admits to the unwanted sexual encounter as a rape or even considers the act of sex without consent to be rape. Jaffe and colleagues (2017) found that women who are sexually victimized by an intimate partner are less likely to label their experience as rape.
